Going Viral with IL: Integrating Information Literacy into Your Library’s Social Media
Social media outlets dominate the way many library users consume information and communicate with others. In an effort to promote information literacy instruction beyond the classroom and to spread awareness about the library, this session examines the integration of information literacy concepts into an academic library’s social media platforms. Looking to the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for inspiration, the presenters discuss how they developed and implemented a content strategy for the library and government document social media pages which included monthly themes, promotion of services, and more interactive content. The presenters consider what types of content worked well, what did not, and steps for assessing and improving content to reach more users. This presentation aims to inspire new ideas about ways to discuss information literacy and to encourage others to explore what social media platforms would work best for their libraries, design content to engage users, and develop strategies for navigating social media in today’s partisan environment
Using a bespoke situated digital kiosk to encourage user participation in healthcare environment design
Involving users through participation in healthcare service and environment design is growing. Existing approaches and toolkits for practitioners and researchers are often paper based involving workshops and other more traditional design approaches such as paper prototyping. The advent of digital technology provides the opportunity to explore new platforms for user participation. This paper presents results from three studies that used a bespoke situated user participation digital kiosk, engaging 33 users in investigating healthcare environment design. The studies, from primary and secondary care settings, allowed participant feedback on each environment and proved a novel, engaging “21st century” way to participate in the appraisal of the design process. The results point toward this as an exciting and growing area of research in developing not just a new method of user participation but also the technology that supports it. Limitations were noted in terms of data validity and engagement with the device. Mass production of volume phase holographic gratings for the VIRUS spectrograph array
The Visible Integral-field Replicable Unit Spectrograph (VIRUS) is a baseline
array of 150 copies of a simple, fiber-fed integral field spectrograph that
will be deployed on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). VIRUS is the first
optical astronomical instrument to be replicated on an industrial scale, and
represents a relatively inexpensive solution for carrying out large-area
spectroscopic surveys, such as the HET Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). Each
spectrograph contains a volume phase holographic (VPH) grating with a 138 mm
diameter clear aperture as its dispersing element. The instrument utilizes the
grating in first-order for 350-550 nm. Including witness samples, a suite of
170 VPH gratings has been mass produced for VIRUS. Here, we present the design
of the VIRUS VPH gratings and a discussion of their mass production. We
additionally present the design and functionality of a custom apparatus that
has been used to rapidly test the first-order diffraction efficiency of the
gratings for various discrete wavelengths within the VIRUS spectral range. This
device has been used to perform both in-situ tests to monitor the effects of
adjustments to the production prescription as well as to carry out the final
acceptance tests of the gratings' diffraction efficiency. Finally, we present

Longitudinal Education and Career Outcomes of a Cancer Research Training Program for Underrepresented Students: The Meharry-Vanderbilt-Tennessee State University Cancer Partnership
This study examined longitudinal education and career outcomes of the Meharry-Vanderbilt-Tennessee State University Cancer Partnership, the longest-running National Cancer Institute (NCI) Comprehensive Partnerships in Advancing Cancer Health Equity (CPACHE) program site in the United States. Degree completion rates were calculated and progression along the entire postsecondary “pipeline” was quantified for 204 participants recruited between 2011 and 2020. For participants who had entered the workforce, career outcomes were also analyzed. Relative to comparison data, participants completed degrees and progressed through the higher education “pipeline” to earn advanced degrees at remarkably high rates; the majority entered careers in which they support or conduct cancer research. The latter is important, because most participants identify with demographic categories currently underrepresented in the cancer research workforce. This article makes two contributions to knowledge on research training programs for underrepresented students: 1) it quantifies participants’ progression along the entire postsecondary education pipeline as well as into the workforce, and 2) it identifies points where participants are most prone to exit the pipeline rather than progress. We identify two types of exits—permanent and temporary—and offer empirically supported operational definitions for both. Evaluators may find the quantitative model and/or definitions useful for analyzing similar programs

Enteric helminths promote Salmonella co-infection by altering the intestinal metabolome
Intestinal helminth infections occur pre dominantly in regions where exposure to enteric bacterial pathogens is also common. Helminth infections inhibit host immunity against microbial pathogens, which has largely been attributed to the induction of regulatory or type 2 (Th2) immune responses. Here we demonstrate an additional three-way interaction in which helminth infection alters the metabolic environment of the host intestine to enhance bacterial pathogenicity. We show that an ongoing helminth infection increased colonization by Salmonella independently of T regulatory or Th2 cells. Instead, helminth infection altered the metabolic profile of the intestine, which directly enhanced bacterial expression of Salmonella pathogenicity island 1 (SPI-1) genes and increased intracellular invasion. These data reveal a novel mechanism by which a helminth-modified metabolome promotes susceptibility to bacterial co-infection
